Who should go for Breast Cancer diagnosis?

Normally, all women between the ages of 18 to 54 should regularly scan their breasts for visible changes/ discomfort and consult their physicians for breast cancer screening.

This would ensure an early detection and optimal cancer treatment, thereby eliminating the cancer at initial stages. Though there are individual methods for breast cancer diagnosis, getting opinions from a professional medical practitioner is always advisable to ensure comprehensive diagnosis.

Women in their 20’s should start being alert of visible changes in their breasts, especially if they have a record of cancer patients in their family. Apart from the annual or bi-annual comprehensive physical checkups, they should also start diagnosing themselves for visible signs.

During the self exam, these conditions/ symptoms should act visible:

1. Lumps or localized swelling in breast

2. Inflammation, sores and skin rashes

3. Dimples/ tenderness in nipples

4. Unnatural pain in nipples

5. Abnormal discharge from nipples

It must be kept in mind that these symptoms are not decisive, absolute and self-inferential. Many other body conditions like hormonal imbalances or pregnancy might result in similar symptoms.

General Procedures of effective Breast Cancer diagnosis

Clinical examinations

For women in their 20’s and 30’s, even the slightest trace of an anomaly or an unexpected growth in the breast should necessitate a mammography or an ultrasound to detect breast cancer. Having a clear conception about breast cancer symptoms should also help women to identify and pursue a course of action. Consultations with a gynecologist and later, an oncologist, are advisable as they would differentiate the exact nature of the symptoms from hormonal changes, pregnancy etc.

Mammograms

Throughout the world, breast cancer mammograms are accepted today as the most effective and accurate technique used for breast cancer diagnosis. Mammograms could identify and detect about 90% of breast cancer traces even at rudimentary stages, before it shows visible symptoms. The American Cancer Society suggests that women over 40, who are most susceptible to breast cancer, should have an annual mammogram done. Even if the nascent cancer cells haven’t yielded visible symptoms that could be detected through self-examinations, mammograms could pick them up. This helps in early cancer detection, as the mammogram images are useful for the doctors to base their course of treatment on.

Breast MRI

Breast MRI is a technique that is best used in combination with a mammogram. Useful to detect different aspects and levels of changes in breast tissue, these tests are somewhat expensive and find specialized application. Hence, women should consult their individual doctors before going ahead with a Breast MRI.
