The usage and the effectiveness of Breast cancer radiation therapy after surgery

Throughout the world, scientists and oncologists have been trying to formulate newer and more advanced courses of cancer treatment. The primary objective in these researches isn’t merely achieving effective cure, but also preventing potential recurrences and relapse. Every day, newer, safer and alternative breast cancer treatments are being devised that makes optimum use of modern medical discoveries. Radiation therapy or radiotherapy is one such sterling advancement that has had tremendous impact in modern cancer treatment and research.

Who needs breast cancer radiation therapy?

Breast cancer has been an extremely common condition that globally infects thousands of women in the age groups of 16 – 54 every year. Its mortality and commonness makes it an extremely feared disease and so, every woman should be educated about the details of breast cancer.

Radiation therapy has been in use to treat breast cancer with a fairly respectable percentage of success. Of all the courses of treatment that breast cancer warrants, breast cancer radiation guarantees the safest and most localized form of treatment that also leaves minimal side-effects. Radiation therapy is particularly effective to target and neutralize stray cancer cells and prevent a relapse.

When is breast cancer radiation necessary?

Breast cancer radiation is usually administered after the cancerous lump has been surgically removed/ extracted from the breast. Though surgery is still the primary course of breast cancer treatment, surgical procedures may greatly vary depending on the intensity and advancement of the infection. Surgery may be necessitated to remove the cancerous lump from the breast, thereby preserving the breast’s natural shape and formation. This procedure is called lumpectomy. More advanced cases of infection necessitate the breast cancer mastectomy, a surgical procedure that completely removes the breast. Surgeries might also be carried out to effect a breast cancer lymph node dissection.

Radiation therapy usually follows the surgical procedures, targeting the stray (and scattered) infected cells that might’ve missed surgical destruction. These cells initially are not clustered and are too small to register, but may regroup to cause a breast cancer relapse. Timely administration of radiation therapy effectively reduces these chances. Because of its massive intensity and concise range, radiotherapy has a very satisfactory success rate.

After breast cancer radiation therapy

Usually after the procedural surgery, a person is completely cured and free from breast cancer. However, not following it up with radiation therapy would mean that the cancer might resurface and might again need subsequent treatment. Considering the great physical demands placed by cancer treatment on the body and its debilitating aftermath, that is a frightening possibility. Breast cancer radiation therapy reduces chances of recurrence by almost half to two-thirds and ensures comprehensive cure. It is important for every individual to closely follow the prescribed course of cancer treatment to achieve faster recovery. So don’t hesitate to discuss the possibilities of radiotherapy with your doctor. The complete cure is well worth the effort!!
