A complete guide to the possibilities of breast cancer recurrence and essential ways to recognize it

Going through cancer treatment could well be termed as an extremely upsetting and traumatic experience, both physically as well as psychologically. So naturally, the first question that springs to every breast cancer survivors mind is about the chances of its recurrence. To most, the cancer in itself is even considered to be a lesser ordeal that the painful treatment and its scarring aftermath. The fear of recurrence leads to needless speculation and misapprehension and, in turn, anxiety, stress, lack of sleep and even psychological instability.

Often after complete cure, the feeling of safety isolates the survivor and he/she starts to feel neglected. For breast cancer survivors, the ordeal of coming close of losing ones essential femininity is often aggravated by the fear of having to experience it again. This is why it is so important for women to be educated about the possibilities, signs and potential treatment for breast cancer recurrence.

When is breast cancer recurrence treatment necessary?

A Recurrence is when a patient, after successful recovering from any particular cancer infection is again diagnosed with the same type of cancer in the future. Doctors insist that the interval must be equal or more than a year for it to qualify as recurrence. If the interval between the two infections is shorter, then it is primarily assumed that the initial treatment proved a failure.

Breast Cancer recurrences (also applicable to any cancer type) are of three types local, regional and distant. Local recurrences refer to infections diagnosed within close proximity to the tissues where the cancer was diagnosed originally. Regional recurrences refer to infections that occur in the lymph nodes close to the breast. As the name suggests, distant recurrences are those infections that are diagnosed in places that are separated from the original infected area by a considerable distance. The sites for this are usually the bones, liver or lungs. Primarily, the level and the category of recurrence determine the type and the extent of breast cancer recurrence treatment that the patient must undergo.

What are the symptoms that should prompt breast cancer recurrence treatment?

Women are advised to regularly check their breast for any anomalies in shape, structure or skin. Chances of breast cancer recurrence arise if any abnormalities like skin lumps, localized inflammation, swelling or scaling to the nipple is discovered. One should also carefully examine symptoms like abnormal weight loss, fevers, cramps and flash pains post treatment. Although these in themselves arent enough causes of alarm, getting a cancer check-up done bi-annually is advisable.

Conclusion: The Breast Cancer Recurrence Treatment

Breast cancer has now been considered as more of a chronically sustained condition one that has a potential for numerous alternative treatments. Hopefully, with new discoveries, treating recurrence of breast cancers might become easy, extremely secure and painless.
