Identification of Breast Cancer in its different stages helps to take a decision about the proper treatment.
Today Medical Science has advanced a long way in treatment of breast cancer. Many options are opened for one to choose from and most of them are easy and less costly. The type of treatment solely depends on stage and criticality of the disease that is diagnosed.
Breast cancer treatment- Stage I
Small infected area with a lesser damage can be classified as the stage I. In this stage the cancer does not spread to the lymph nodes and hence it is considered less harmful than the advance stages of the disease. In the first stage of breast cancer, lumpectomy (breast conservation surgery) and partial mastectomy are the options for the treatment. The lumpectomy can be done just after the main surgery or at a later stage.
Pre-operative chemotherapy sometimes helps a lot to reduce the size of the tumor, which permits breast-conservation surgery. In both cases the lymph nodes of the affected area is examined carefully and removed immediately, if found infected.
Breast cancer treatment- Stage II
When cancer spreads to a larger part and affects one or more lymph node, experts classifies it as stage II. First part of treatment is quiet similar to that of stage I. Even after mastectomy the radiation therapy is prescribed in almost all cases. The frequency depends on size of infection and tumor. The numbers of affected lymph nodes that are discovered after the test are also taken into consideration before prescribing radiation therapy. An advance therapy is prescribed that includes hormone therapy, chemotherapy and trastuzumab, called as Adjuvant systemic therapy. To reduce size of tumor before the surgery in a stage II case doctors and specialists advice neoadjuvant therapy.
Breast cancer treatment- Stage III
Stage II and stage III treatment for the breast cancer is more or less the same. The stages are classified on basis of the area and lymph nodes affected. Before patient goes for surgery, a neoadjuvant therapy might be required for reduction of the tumor. For advanced stage III cases, doctor uses chemotherapy before surgery.
Breast cancer treatment- Stage IV
Stage IV breast cancers are the final or the last stage of cancer. In these cases the infection spreads in other parts of the body and affects a huge number of lymph nodes. The only treatment option during this stage is the systematic therapy. Depending on the situation and patient’s stage, chemotherapy, hormone therapy and other targeted therapies are prescribed. Herceptin and Avastin are the targeted therapies often used. But these therapies have different side effects and hence a doctor’s advice must be taken before starting these therapies.
Radiation therapy is the common post-surgical treatment in almost all the stages.
