An overview of the pioneering breakthroughs in advanced breast cancer care and cure

Scientists and medical experts around the world have been investing a lot of experimentation, research and clinical trials to find an effective cure for breast cancer. Fortunately, this killer disease that claims thousands of lives every year around the world can now be confidently fought using advanced medical treatment.

Application and necessity for the latest breast cancer treatment

Conventional methods of surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy have so far yielded satisfactory results in treating breast cancer. But the constant quest to facilitate a more effective, more comfortable recovery process has given rise to advanced treatment procedures. However, breast cancer manifests and advances differently in different individuals, so the effectiveness and applicability of these treatments would greatly vary.

Specialized breakthroughs in latest breast cancer treatment

Angiogenesis drugs:

A very ambitious medical advancement in latest breast cancer treatment has been the angiogenesis drugs. These drugs prevent fresh blood vessels, which sustains the growth of cancer cells, from growing. Effectively tested to treat colon cancer, these drugs are finding application in treating advanced stages of breast cancer infection. However, a lot of refinement and advancement is still needed for it to successfully treat cancer at nascent stages or to prevent it altogether.

Abraxane and protein-bound nano-particle drugs:

Abraxane is now being globally regarded as the new wonder rug, capable of treating breast cancer with great success. In actuality, Abraxane is an extremely capable process that delivers and accentuates an existing drug – Paclitaxel. Paclitaxel is insoluble in water, which reduces it’s effectiveness despite being an effective chemotherapeutic agent. Its administration to patients requires a solvent base. Now often, many patients are allergic or incompatible with solvent bases and ideally require water-soluble chemotherapeutic drugs. With the application of Abraxane, Paclitaxel could now be dissolved in water through a procedure called protein-bound nanoparticle technology.

Aromatase Inhibitors:

The usage of Aromatase inhibitors was first permitted by the FDA in the year 2000. Recent experimentation has given evidence to the effectiveness of this hormone therapy over the conventional tamoxifen. Aromatase inhibitors also actively prevent cancer recurrence in patients who have survived hormone-positive breast cancer. However, its effectiveness is limited to the estrogen produced outside the ovaries, making it effective only in post-menopausal women. Recently, research has been directed at understanding the side-effects involved in this therapy, including muscle/joint pains and osteoporosis.

Herceptin:

Herceptin is a recent advancement in the treatment of HER2 – positive breast cancer infections. About a quarter of cases of breast cancer shows a huge deposit of the gene HER2neu, which regulates cell growth, repair and division. Excess production of this protein directly causes an exponential rate of cell growth, thereby accentuating the cancer. Herceptin has been in sustained usage to treat relapses or metastatic breast cancers, as it targets the HER2neu protein and reduces tumor. Despite showing some side-effects in a small number of cases, it could be assumed that Herceptin would soon be an effective treatment of nascent breast cancer.
