The benefits of metastatic breast cancer treatment in treating advanced breast cancer

In medical terminology, metastatic breast cancer is defined as a breast cancer that has spread beyond the breast and lymphatic nodes to other internal visceral parts. Usually, the metastatic cancer constitutes the stage IV levels of breast cancer advancement. In certain degrees of advancement, the breast cancer can virtually spread to any visceral part within the body like bones lungs and the liver. Usually, metastatic breast cancer treatment is directed towards treating the symptoms and the cancerous manifestations and extending the patient’s longevity.

What necessitates metastatic breast cancer treatment?

The breast cancer infection usually spreads to the lymphatic nodes from the breast. In the initial levels of diagnosis, surgical removal of a few lymph nodes usually contains the infection. Cases have also been reported where lymph nodes were spared and the cancer was transmitted via the bloodstream.

Cancer can develop rapidly and attain stage IV threat levels, if it is unnoticed or if the individual has avoided breast examinations. An early detection of cancer facilitates timely treatment, thereby increasing the chances of complete and effective cure. The American Cancer Society has issued guidelines to raise breast cancer awareness, which stipulates regular self- and clinical breast examinations. Women who are above 40 years should also go for annual mammograms.

Areas that metastatic breast cancer could affect

As discussed earlier, in advanced stages of infection cancer gradually spreads from the breast to a host of visceral organs. In order of probability, the sequence should read like – bones (approx. 25% chances of cancer spreading from breasts to bones), lungs and liver. The metastatic breast cancer is also likely to affect spinal column, pelvis, ribs and skull.

Normally, metatstic infections in the bone could be of two primary types – osteolytic and osteoblastic. In osteolytic cancer, the cancer corrodes the bones and makes it porous. In osteoblastic cancer, the cancer increases the mineral density of the bone structure, making them brittle. Both metastates are extremely painful and to bear.

Metastatic breast cancer treatment

The option of surgical treatment loses viability in the later stages of cancer advancement, because the cancer is no longer locally contained. Radiotherapy is often used to decrease the spread of cancer, and relieve pains. Metastatic treatment is often a physically sapping process, so its administration depends on the patient’s health, medical records and reaction to specific medical stimulus.

A systemic therapy like chemotherapy, which deals with the entire body, is useful in treating a metastate cancer infection. Chemotherapy involves administering anti-cancer drugs on a regular basis to patients, depending on individual responsiveness. Chemotherapy affects the cancerous cells as well as causes collateral degeneration of healthy cells. This is why chemotherapeutic sessions are allowed after intervals of several weeks or months, allowing time for healthy cells to regenerate and recuperate while the cancer cells are destroyed.
